About Us

“Awakening Women’s Potential in the Energy and Extractives sectors”

The Association for Women in Energy and Extractives in Kenya (AWEIK) empowers women and communities to achieve equitable professional and economic growth in Kenya’s energy and extractives sectors. Founded in 2016, AWEIK champions inclusivity by fostering women’s active participation across the Energy and Extractives value chains through policy advocacy, capacity building, mentorship and business development services.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality

AWEIK’s core mission is to empower women and promote gender inclusion in the energy and extractives sectors, which directly aligns with achieving gender equality and expanding women’s leadership and economic participation.

SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy

Through its Women in Energy Transition program promoting sustainable energy solutions, advocacy for clean energy access, and women’s leadership in the energy transition, AWEIK contributes to ensuring access to sustainable energy for all.

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

By building women’s skills, supporting entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business development, and economic empowerment in extractives and energy value chains, AWEIK supports inclusive economic growth and decent work.

SDG 13 – Climate Action

AWEIK’s work on climate adaptation, mitigation and resilience contributes to climate action and promoting a just energy transition.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

AWEIK works with governments, development partners, private sector, and communities to influence policy and strengthen inclusive systems—reflecting SDG 17’s focus on partnerships.

At AWEIK, our programs are designed to empower and advance women across Kenya’s energy and extractives sectors by strengthening capacity, driving advocacy, and supporting business development to ensure equitable opportunities and meaningful participation.

Together with our partners, we have achieved significant milestones in empowering women and communities in Kenya’s energy and extractives sectors.

Women and communities across Kenya were trained on sustainable practices, environmental safeguards, occupational safety, and gender-based violence prevention.

Transactions facilitated through gemstone markets, enabling women and communities to earn 3–5 times more for their gemstones.

Women and community members reached through Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), with a 98% growth in access to credit—the total loan portfolio increased from USD 62,856 to USD 124,160.

Young people & early-career professionals engaged through targeted programs, mentorship, and skills-building initiatives, equipping them with the knowledge, networks, and opportunities to advance in their careers & contribute meaningfully to their communities.
