Women in Extractives

AWEIK’s Women in Extractives Program advances gender inclusion and empowerment across the extractives value chain by centering women and communities in all aspects of the sector. The program supports women to take leadership roles, access opportunities, and engage in sustainable and responsible practices in mining, gemstones, and other extractives.

Key Focus Areas:
AWEIK’s Mine to Market Initiative strengthens direct linkages between women-led gemstone enterprises and regional and international markets. Through platforms such as Market Days and Gems Africa, the initiative promotes ethical sourcing, traceability, fair market access, and local value addition to drive inclusive growth in the extractives sector.
AWEIK’s Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship program equips women and communities with the skills to manage finances, build sustainable enterprises, and invest in alternative livelihoods across the energy and extractives sectors. Through targeted training and access to finance mechanisms such as savings, borrowing, and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), the program supports informed decision-making, enterprise growth, and long-term economic resilience.
VIEW CURRICULUM

Mining remains a high-risk industry, making the protection of workers, women, communities, and the environment a shared responsibility. AWEIK promotes comprehensive OEHS approaches aligned with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles to advance safe, responsible, and sustainable mining practices. Through regulatory, legal, social, and engineering controls, the program supports improved safety, environmental safeguards, and inclusive operations that minimize risk and environmental harm while empowering communities.

AWEIK promotes safe, inclusive, and respectful environments in the extractives sector by addressing sexual and gender-based violence. Through targeted training and community engagement, we strengthen prevention, protective measures, and monitoring mechanisms that support women’s safety, leadership, and meaningful participation across sector value chains.
