AWEIK is supported by a dedicated secretariat overseeing its programs, advocacy, and operations.
Michelle Mwambela is a highly accomplished professional with over 10 years of diverse experience in legal, natural resource management, climate and environmental justice advocacy, project management, and women’s economic empowerment.
She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Women in Energy and Extractives in Kenya (AWEIK), having previously served as Programs Manager. Michelle champions an equitable and sustainable future for African communities by developing solutions with and for the people.
At AWEIK, Michelle has led Climate Smart Mining Initiatives in nine Kenyan counties. Through her work with women Michelle was recognized and nominated as WIM100 2024. She successfully managed projects funded by organizations such as the World Bank, OSIEA, Oxfam, and the Australian High Commission. Her strategic guidance spans climate justice, green economy, women’s empowerment, and energy alternatives. Michelle also plays a key role in policy and advocacy work in Kenya’s energy and extractives sector as well as the climate change and Just Energy Transition discourse.
Michelle holds an MBA from Unicaf University, a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi. She has also completed executive courses from Oxford University and the Columbia Centre for Sustainable Investment (CCSI).
Julius Mbindyo
Julius is a professional accountant with over 12 years’ of experience in finance, grants, procurement and logistics and administration.
He manages all financial and grant activities under each project and program undertaken by the Association. Julius is responsible for financial and project and grant management, strategic analysis, overseeing and directing treasury audit, tax, accounting and budgeting. He is also skilled in long-range forecasting, budgeting, cash flow management and reporting.
Grace Aluoch
Grace Aluoch is a Communications Specialist and Digital Marketer with over seven years of experience in strategic communications, digital engagement, and advocacy-focused storytelling.
She supports the organization in strengthening its visibility and influence across the energy and extractives sectors through content development, digital campaigns, and strategic communication. Her work centers on using media to drive awareness, inclusion, and policy-relevant conversations by amplifying the voices of women and communities across extractives and energy value chains.
Grace also brings a strong background in program coordination, human resources, and brand management, supporting impactful and mission-driven initiatives.
