Fiscal Justice
At AWEIK, our work in Fiscal Justice is centered on transforming revenue flows in the energy, extractives, and climate sectors into equitable wealth that directly benefits women. We advocate for strengthening Domestic Revenue Mobilization (DRM) by promoting transparent contract disclosure and rigorous tax enforcement to ensure corporations fairly contribute their share, thereby increasing the public resources available for essential social services. A critical focus is combating Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs)—the fraudulent movement of money out of Kenya—from the extractive sector, which starves the country of funds that could otherwise be invested in women-led climate resilience and clean energy initiatives.
Crucially, we champion Gender-Responsive Taxation reform, advocating for progressive policies that eliminate explicit and implicit biases in the tax system (e.g., regressive consumption taxes or biases against women in informal trade) and ensure public budgets—especially those funded by energy and mineral revenues—are allocated to reduce women’s unpaid care burden and finance their economic empowerment in the green economy.
