WORTH Program: Empowering Women Artisanal Miners Through Financial Inclusion
The WORTH Program is a transformative initiative designed to empower artisanal miners in Taita Taveta and Kwale Counties by providing them with financial literacy, access to credit, and sustainable income-generating opportunities. Implemented by AWEIK in partnership with Pact Inc., the program mobilizes mining communities into Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), enabling members to save, access loans, and invest in businesses. Through regular financial literacy training, WORTH equips members with essential skills in money management, record-keeping, and business development. Additionally, structured savings and loaning activities allow participants to secure financial independence while building social and economic resilience.
Beyond financial inclusion, WORTH promotes gender inclusivity, youth participation, and social security integration, ensuring long-term sustainability. Members have successfully launched and expanded businesses in agriculture, retail, and service industries, creating alternative income streams beyond mining. By fostering self-reliance and strengthening community networks, WORTH continues to transform the financial landscape for women in the artisanal mining sector, promoting sustainable economic growth and empowerment.
