Sexual Gender Based Violence

Sexual Gender Based Violence

AWEIK is committed to addressing the pervasive issue of violence against women (VAWG) in Kenya’s artisanal mining sector. Through targeted training programs, AWEIK equips women and men artisanal miners from key mining counties with the knowledge and tools to advocate for the prevention of SGBV and foster safer mining communities.

The training aims to ensure the full participation of women across the gold and gemstone mining supply chains by empowering them to take leadership roles and drive meaningful change. It focuses on creating protective measures and fostering inclusive, respectful environments at mine sites and in surrounding communities.

Key Objectives:
Develop Protective Guidelines: Establish comprehensive guidelines to prevent and respond to VAWG at mine sites and in communities.
Encourage Community Engagement: Design activities that promote safe and inclusive community participation in addressing SGBV.
Build Monitoring Mechanisms: Identify and train members to monitor, document, and address gender-based violence through Conflict Resolution Committees.

By empowering miners with the knowledge to prevent and address VAWG, AWEIK aims to create equitable and secure environments where women can thrive as integral participants in the mining sector.
